Tambula owner arrested on match-fixing charges

A British passport-holding Bangladeshi national who is the owner of the Tampulla Thunders team in the Lanka Premier League was arrested yesterday (22) on charges of match-fixing at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

The arrest was confirmed by an officer of the Sports Ministry’s Special Investigation Unit for Prevention of Sports-related Crimes. The suspect, Tamim Rahman, was to be produced before the court.

The charges leveled against him are LPL. It is not confirmed whether or not it is related to other competitions.

The Tambula team was bought by the Bangladeshi entrepreneur-led Imperial Sports Group last April.

The Lankan Premier League players’ auction was held in Colombo yesterday and the International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption committee also participated in it.
