Apple’s new device launch period has now come in again after a long time since the iPhone 15 was released. The iPhone 16 launch brings the first iPhone designed to support on-device generative AI. But should you buy it? Are the core improvements worth the money? While the new model has notable improvements, it is an evolutionary smartphone.Apple’s iPhone development roadmap runs several years into the future and the company is continually working with suppliers on several successive iPhone models simultaneously, which is why we sometimes get rumored feature leaks so far ahead of launch. The iPhone 17 series is no different – already we have some idea of what to expect from Apple’s 2025 smartphone lineup. But many rumor mill has been going crazy with iPhone 17 leaks.
In fact, we’ve heard that brand a new model, called the iPhone 17 Slim & Air could be coming. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo disagrees with The Information, and says that the device won’t replace the Plus, but it won’t be higher-end or more expensive than the Pro models. For that reason, we don’t know quite what to expect from the new iPhone, and we’ll have to wait for additional information to be released for clarification. Even though rumors disagree on specifications, multiple sources agree that there will be a new iPhone and it will be thinner than existing models.
Reasons for skip iPhone 16 and wait for iPhone 17 …
–Under Panel Face ID Technology–
Analyst Ross Young initially expected that the iPhone 17 would feature under-panel Face ID technology and cameras. This would mean that Face ID’s facial recognition capabilities won’t obscure the display as much as they have on recent models.Young added that under-display Face ID wouldn’t be on the iPhone 17 or iPhone 17 Slim, but would be in the Pro models.
- What is Under Panel Face ID Technology?
The technology would effectively make the camera invisible to users when not in use, hiding the camera and eliminating any punch-hole gaps in the screen.
–Always-on ProMotion Display–
iPhone 17 is expected to feature an always-on ProMotion display to the iPhone 17, which can shift its refresh rate from 120Hz to as low as 1Hz — offering a true low-power Always On Display across the entire line-up.The “LTPO” (low-temperature Polycrystalline oxide) displays, which have occasionally appeared on Apple’s Pro models, will be a true jump in display technology for all models.Simply put, ProMotion is Apple’s fancy way to brand a high refresh rate 120Hz display on its devices. This means that instead of the traditional 60Hz refresh rate, the ProMotion displays refresh 120 times per second, resulting in a significantly smoother visual experience.Apple first announced the ProMotion technology back in 2017 with the release of the second-generation 10.5-inch iPad Pro, but it wasn’t the first tech company to do so. In fact, just months before the release of the iPad, Razer announced the Razer Phone, the first smartphone to feature a 120Hz display.Since 2017, many Android smartphones started featuring 120Hz panels.ProMotion also allows the display to ramp down to a more power-efficient refresh rate as low as 1Hz, which is why the iPhone 15 Pro screens feature an always-on capability that shows the Lock Screen’s clock, widgets, notifications, and wallpaper even when the device is locked.
–24MP Selfie Camera–
A report from Apple analyst Ming Chi-Kuo suggests that the iPhone 17 will feature a 24MP front-facing camera with a six-element lens. The big advantage here is that the quality of images will be better maintained even if the user crops or zooms in on them.Fresh reports are suggesting that Apple is set to significantly upgrade the front camera capabilities of its entire iPhone 17 lineup. According to Apple analyst, Jeff Pu all models, including the standard, Pro, and potentially a “Slim” variant, will feature a 24-megapixel front camera.A research note from Haitong Investment Bank, accessed by MacRumors, claims that all iPhone 17 models, including the potential “iPhone 17 Slim,” will feature a 24-megapixel front camera with six plastic lens .
–Memory Upgrades–
Apple sleuth Ming-Chi Kuo chimed in in a tweet. According to Kuo only the iPhone 17 Pro Max will come with 12GB RAM, with the other models still limited to 8GB RAM.The higher-end iPhone 17 models could include 12GB RAM, while the standard iPhone 17 model is expected to have 8GB. 12GB RAM would be a 4GB increase over the iPhone 15 Pro models, while 8GB RAM would be a 2GB increase over the standard iPhone 15 models.
–A-Series Chip–
It sounds like iPhone 17 series won’t get TSMC’s next-generation 2-nanometer chips, but we are expecting A19 chip technology that’s likely built on an upgraded 3-nanometer process. Apple typically upgrades iPhones with faster and more efficient chip technology each year. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are expected to include an A19 Pro chip, while the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 slim could have the standard A19 chip. TSMC is working on its N3P process, with mass production set to begin in late 2024, so that’s the chip technology that we’re expecting Apple will use for the iPhone 17 lineup. Compared to earlier versions of 3nm chips, the N3P chips offer increased performance efficiency and increased transistor density.
–Camera update–
All of the iPhone 17 models are expected to have a 24-megapixel front-facing camera with a six-element lens, which would be an upgrade over the current 12-megapixel selfie camera. A higher number of megapixels allows for more detail and clearer images when cropping in.The iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to feature a 48-megapixel Wide camera, a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera, and a 48-megapixel Tetraprism Telephoto camera, which will make it the first iPhone to feature three 48-megapixel cameras.
At least one iPhone 17 model next year will feature a mechanical aperture that will let users adjust the size of the iPhone 17’s aperture, changing the amount of light reaching the lens. Current iPhone models have fixed apertures, but a variable aperture will let images be captured with shallow depth-of-field.
